KAAD Scholarship Opportunities

Dear all,
Bonn, June 2012

the Arab World is presently undergoing an unprecedented process of change. What is crucial for this process to succeed, are motivated young people willing to devote their skills and expertise as well as their conviction and creativity to the societies of their home countries. A
study period abroad supported by the German scholarship institution “Catholic Academic Exchange Service (KAAD)” can offer a chance to open up new horizons for those willing to take that challenge.

Please join us in addressing young talents who have the academic and personal potential to become “brains for change” and who are interested in an opportunity of pursuing post-graduate studies in Germany.

KAAD Scholarships are open to graduates of all academic subject areas. We can support:

• Master studies (up to 2 years)
• Ph.D. / Doctoral studies (up to 3 years)
• Research visits (2 to 6 months)

KAAD’s Invitation Programme (S1) is open to applicants who are currently living in their home countries in the Middle East and who are interested in applying for a study visit to Germany supported by KAAD. We can offer:

• full scholarship amounting to 750,-Euros (Master studies) resp. 1.000,-Euros (Doctoral studies)
• intensive German language course including board and accommodation (up to 6 months at Kreuzberg Institute in Bonn)
• international travel costs
• monthly health insurance benefit

Our focus countries in the Middle East are Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine and Syria.
Scholarship inquiries from these countries are being passed on to local partner committees.
The KAAD partner committees bring together representatives from local churches and universities as well as KAAD alumni for offering guidance to applicants and advising KAAD’s office in Bonn on incoming applications. Inquiries from the remaining countries of the Middle Eastern region are being dealt with by our team in KAAD’s office in Bonn directly.

Please find KAAD’s inquiry form attached. The deadline for applications is

30 June 2012 (for the academic selection committee meeting in September 2012) 15 January 2013 (for the academic selection committee meeting in March 2013)

There are two specifics to KAAD scholarships that are worth noting:

Developmental mandate and orientation towards reintegration

Being a development-oriented scholarship organisation by the Catholic Church in Germany, KAAD supports students and researchers who are planning to return to their home countries after conclusion of their study visit to Germany. KAAD scholarships are granted on the assumption
that scholars are determined to professionally integrate in their home countries and help advance the political, cultural and social development of their societies.

Cooperation with local churches and openness for dialogue

The key mandate of KAAD’s work in the Middle East is support for and cooperation with local churches and Christian communities. As part of this, we are also addressing members of other religious communities who are active in inter-religious dialogue and cooperation activities.
Therefore KAAD welcomes applications from non-Christian applicants interacting with local churches or church-related organisations. Irrespective of their denomination or religion, all applicants are required to present a recommendation letter by a local church representative
as part of their application.

More information can be found in the attached materials as well as on our website (www.kaad.de). I would be grateful if you could pass on the attached information to students, researchers, colleagues and church contacts who might find an interest in them.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you require any additional information or printed materials.
I am looking forward to hearing back from you with comments or suggestions.

Kind regards from Bonn
